In 171 episodes of The Vampire Diaries, the show had countless storylines that entwined with each other. The CW drama also had a huge ensemble cast, which made it hard to keep track of every plotline that came up. This was why there were many characters and stories in Mystic Falls that never quite got the resolution they deserved.

Vampiric lore was something that was ever-changing on the show, and sometimes, new rules were made up over old ones, which were forgotten. Sometimes, there were new and important characters introduced, but they disappeared towards the end of their character arcs. These forgotten and unresolved plotlines in The Vampire Diaries left fans scratching their heads.
10 Blood Sharing Between Vampires
While vampires were discussed extensively in The Vampire Diaries, one particular trait of theirs was only introduced in Season 4. Elena's transformation into a vampire was contentious, and it became worse because she could not keep blood down. However, when Damon offered her his blood, she was able to do so. This was called blood sharing, and it was supposed to be a rather intimate act between two vampires.

In: Season 4, Episode 2 "The Rager"
Stefan was enraged when he got to know that Damon had blood shared with his girlfriend, which meant that it was an important part of romance and sexuality for vampires. However, after this particular instance, blood sharing was never mentioned at all. It seemed like too important of a practice to be missed, especially since TVD showed sexuality frequently.
9 Damon's Supernatural Powers

In Season 1, Damon seemed like a vampire who was blessed with extra powers from the very start. He was seen controlling fog and winds with his mind, as well as controlling animals like crows and ravens. In addition to this, Damon was also able to compel and manipulate Caroline telepathically to do chores for him and free him from the Salvatore House dungeon.
Damon had extra powers in The Vampire Diaries novels.
These powers were beyond the ordinary, as no other vampire had them. However, Damon, too, seemed to lose these powers as time went on. He stopped controlling the weather or other compelled women, suddenly becoming an ordinary vampire like everyone else.
8 Meredith Fell's Fate

Meredith Fell quickly became an important and interesting character in TVD, as she was a descendant of the Founding Families. She was a doctor who administered her patients with vampire blood to save their lives, and she became fast friends with the Mystic Falls gang. She was the one who gave Elena Damon's vampire blood, which led to her transition in Season 3.
Meredith Fell was played by actress Tory DeVitto.

However, Meredith suddenly disappeared from the show without too much explanation. As she was also a romantic interest for Alaric, her absence was odd. It was only much later that her fate was explained in a throwaway line about how she was alive and well in Alaska with her husband.

7 Caroline's Assault By Damon
Damon's character arc was certainly unconventional in The Vampire Diaries, but the writers forgot about his worst deeds while they showed his redemption. From Vicki to Andie, Damon abused several women, but his assault on Caroline was swept under the rug completely. He had used and abused her egregiously, and Elena seemed to forget that her soulmate had hurt her friend.
Damon gave Liz Forbes' eulogy speech in Season 5.

Caroline herself hardly spoke about it, and then was later seen forgiving Damon when he didn't even ask for forgiveness. For his true redemption, Damon should have taken total accountability for his actions, but these plotlines were conveniently forgotten to further the Delena storyline and provide fan service.
6 The Brotherhood Of The Five
As Silas and the Cure entered the TVD universe, things started becoming complicated. A new supernatural breed was introduced, known as the Brotherhood of The Five. These were gifted Hunters who were tasked with finding Silas and the Cure, and making him mortal again. These Hunters were given tattoos that would lead them to Silas, and they also slayed other immortals like vampires.
Jeremy Gilbert was actually Elena's first cousin, and not her brother as Elena was adopted.

Jeremy also became one of The Five after Connor was killed, but the Brotherhood never actually fulfilled their mission. They let Silas out into the world, but they were not the ones to Cure or vanquish him. This begs the question -- What happened to this group of Hunters? There was no point to their existence later, but Jeremy was shown to still hunt.
5 The Afterlife For Some Characters
The Vampire Diaries had several levels of death and the afterlife, which included the Other Side, Hell, peace, and the Prison Worlds. However, the fates of some supernatural characters were completely absurd, and the rules were forgotten completely when it came to these characters. Humans found peace or hell after death, but vampires didn't.
Bonnie died twice and came back to life in TVD.

The Prison Worlds in The Vampire Diaries, Explained
Damon and Bonnie were thrown into the prison world suddenly, and fans loved their dynamic. But what exactly is the prison world?
Vicki was dragged to Hell from the Other Side, which made no sense as she had not done anything wrong. Jenna was a vampire who never went to The Other Side at all but was seen at peace in the series finale. Bonnie also never felt Katherine passing into the Other Side but forgot about this rule when she should have known. The fates of these characters were arbitrary and forgotten.
4 Jeremy Never Returns To See Elena Again

Nina Dobrev's exit from The Vampire Diaries meant that Elena Gilbert also had to leave the show, which was done through a sleeping curse, so that she may return in the series finale. While Elena did make it back (and the way Bonnie broke her spell also remains a mystery), her closest family, her brother, never returned to see his sister again.
Nina Dobrev has played four roles in The Vampire Diaries universe.
When Elena was cursed, it was assumed that she would stay comatose for at least 60-80 years, so any brother should jump at the opportunity to see her come back to life before time. However, it seemed as though Jeremy's entire character was forgotten or conveniently sent away to Hunt, and never heard from again on the show.
3 The Augustine Society

The existence of the Augustine Society at Whitmore was quite a surprise -- especially because all the Mystic Falls founders seemed to be a part of it. They would do horrific experiments on vampires, and Damon and Enzo had suffered at their hands. In a shocking twist, Elena's father also participated heavily in these atrocities.
Enzo was the first Augustine vampire.
However, the moral and physical consequences of Augustine were forgotten very quickly. In fact, Damon himself had forgotten this part of his life, and he remembered much later. It was a big deal that Elena's father was party to this society, but she was not seen worrying about it too much. The society's future was also not spoken about.

2 The Cure Undoing Compulsions
More TVD folklore that was changed around and forgotten was the Cure for undoing compulsions. At first, this did not happen when Katherine was turned into a human by Elena, but it did take place when Stefan was Cured by Bonnie. Fans assumed that this would be the rule from then onwards, but this was retconned again with future Curing.
Stefan was Cured in Season 8, Episode 11 "You Made a Choice to Be Good".

Elena getting Cured kept her compulsions intact, and Damon also did not have his compelled victims coming forward when he became human. This symptom of the Cure was quite interesting, as it upped the stakes for those who were becoming mortal. Sadly, only Stefan had to bear the brunt, while the others had it easy.
1 Enzo's Afterlife
When it comes to characters who were dealt a bad hand and left in limbo, Enzo is the first name that comes to mind. On the brink of finding his happy ending with Bonnie, Stefan killed Enzo for no good reason. Bonnie then transported Enzo's soul into an alternate dimension she created with her psychic powers, but this made no sense as Enzo was not brought back to life.
Enzo St. John was turned by Lillian Salvatore.

Having him in his dimension while Bonnie did some magic for his return would make sense. However, he was left to his own devices, with limited communication with Bonnie. He didn't even find peace. His fate was left up in the air, and fans were curious to know if Enzo would just stay in limbo forever. They never got answers to this.
